Prime Minister Sushila Karki |
Kathmandu, October 17 – Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sushila Karki has assured that the current transitional government will conduct free and fair elections within six months and hand over power peacefully to the elected government.
Speaking at a briefing with ambassadors, diplomats, and development partners at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singha Durbar, on Friday, PM Karki said, “The primary goal of this non-political transitional government is to organize the House of Representatives elections scheduled for 21 Phagan in a free, fearless, and fair manner, and then transfer authority to the democratically elected government.”
She highlighted the rapid political changes following the recent Gen-Z movement, noting the challenges and opportunities it has brought. The government’s top priority, she emphasized, is maintaining stability and ensuring transparent elections. PM Karki stressed that civil society has high expectations for accountability and good governance, and the government is committed to meeting them.
The Prime Minister also outlined measures already taken to promote good governance and curb corruption. She noted that discussions are ongoing regarding the participation of Nepalis living abroad in the upcoming elections.
PM Karki urged the Gen-Z group to contribute constructively to strengthening Nepal’s democratic system and called on political parties to respect their aspirations. She also mentioned that steps have been taken to prosecute entrenched corruption, amend the national budget to enhance transparency, and form a commission to investigate recent destructive incidents.
